From top left: Hanging out with a fellow traveler (or at least his statue) in Ulan Baatar, the capital of Mongolia (all I can say is that in his travels Genghis Khan caused a lot more collateral damage than I've ever done); with Lada Tikhonova of the US consulate in Yekaterinburg on the border between Asia and Europe in Russia’s Southern Urals; at the wedding of David Smith and Kamellia Soenjoto on the beach in South Bali, Indonesia (Stephanie on right); haircut prewash on the market in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Description:

Over the past 25 years, I’ve visited more than 30 countries, working as a researcher, teacher, trainer and consultant for international and government agencies. It’s given me a rare chance to experience a country as few tourists can, through the perspectives of my local colleagues. My essays on travel, history and culture have been published in newspapers, magazines and online media, and collected in three books: Postcards from Stanland: Journeys in Central Asia, Monsoon Postcards: Indian Ocean Journeys, and Postcards from the Borderlands. The first two are available from the Ohio University Press, and Borderlands from Open Books, All available from independent bookstores, Amazon, and other online booksellers.
